The provisional UK mean temperature was 8.2 °C, which is 2.0 °C above the 1981-2010 long-term average, making it the third warmest November in a series from 1910 (behind 1994 and 2011). It was mildest relative to average in the south where the mean minimum temperature was about 3 °C above average. Much of south-west Scotland together with upland parts of north-west England and north Wales had more than 200% of the average rainfall, and it was wet too across Northern Ireland. However rainfall totals elsewhere were nearer normal. The UK overall had 145% of average rainfall. Many parts of the south and west had less than 50% of the normal sunshine amount, but sunshine was close to average in north-east Scotland. With just 64% of average sunshine, it was the dullest November in the UK series from 1929.

The IIASA database includes three key climatic elements: average monthly rainfall total, average monthly temperature, and monthly average sunshine. For each of the stations used in the gridding exercise, data have been assembled over a long time period - usually between 1961 and 1990 - and then averaged. Annual totals for rainfall, and the averages for temperature and sunshine, were derived from the monthly values. We present here the complete set of raw data maps:
Where do you get your sunshine figures from? The average annual sunshine for Nelson over the last 20 years is 2,676.22 hours, and for Blenheim, 2,622.80 hours. Your figures of 2,400 and 2,500 respectively for Nelson and Blenheim are not only incorrect, they are the wrong way around. Nelson has beaten Blenheim in 15 of the last 20 years, and of the 5 years in which Blenheim won, the maximum difference is 66.9 hours and the minimum 6.25 – and that in a year in which the calculation is questionable as Blenheim’s sunshine was not recorded over July and half of August 2001, so the sunshine figures for this period are based on radiation records.
