Sight And Blindness In Oedipus Rex - Book Report
Possibly the first blatant example of this blindness in Oedipus comes forth when he speaks with Teiresias, attempting to draw from him the name of Laius’s murderer. Oedipus grows frustrated when Teiresias first claims to know everything concerning the situation, and then doesn’t provide the answers that Oedipus is looking for (although Oedipus later discovers Teiresias to have been truthful). Oedipus’s angry impatience with Teiresias shows both his blindness to the truth of the matter and the fact that his emotions tend to interfere with logic, a general blindness in his character. Teiresias, on the other hand, is calm and honest with his argument, reinforcing his own wisdom while, more importantly, making Oedipus’s ignorance appear all the more dire.
