Furthermore, understanding why an opponent might disagree with you and the points they might raise, may help you to understand how to beat those arguments. For instance, one of this week’s topics is about banning boxing. It may be that you inherently believe that boxing should not be banned as it is a good form of exercise and a good outlet for energy and aggression. However, your opponent might argue that we should definitely ban boxing because it's a dangerous sport that causes injuries. If you understand that this is an argument they might make, you can then prepare your counter-argument. For instance you might argue that we shouldn’t ban a sport just because it carries the risk of injury as there are a number of different sports that carry the risk of injury. A runner might injure their legs by over exerting themselves, a ballet dancer may cause lasting damage to their feet, a snowboarder might suffer a terrible fall and a rugby player might be injured when tackled by their opponent. By making this counter-argument, you will help to combat their argument and hopefully win your debate.

Boxing should not be banned, but I feel that public opinion will have the final say in the long run, as it will over fox hunting. I used to really enjoy boxing ten years ago, but I cannot watch a boxing match now. There is a huge difference between other sports and boxing as it is the only sport where the object is to inflict brain damage. Even sports such as motor racing (which is always mentioned by the pro boxing lobby) the object is not to deliberately run your competitors off the road and try to inflict as much physical damage on them as possible. The boxing authorities should think the unthinkable - and consider making the use of headguards mandatory.

In the United Kingdom, a competent adult may legally refuse medical treatment, irrespective of the severity of his condition or the validity of his reasons. With the pre-eminence of an autonomy based model of bioethics, respecting a patient’s wishes forms an integral part of acting in his best interests. It is puzzling, then, to find that the Australian Medical Association have called for a ban on boxing on the grounds that the activity is excessively hazardous to the health of boxers. The often mentioned principle of respect for autonomy is abandoned once the person drops the privileged title of “patient”. This suggests that being a patient confers certain rights which would not exist if that same patient were healthy. How, if at all, can this apparent inconsistency be justified by those in the medical community who wish to see boxing banned? I largely agree with Dr Herrera’s position on the matter, which is essentially that precautionary brain scans should be performed but that boxing should not be banned. A few points, however, remain unclear.

why boxing should not be banned

Boxing should absolutely NOT be banned. It is understandable that people would think boxing should be banned because they do not approve of the whole concept--fighting. However, some people have a true love and passion for the sport, which has been around since the Ancient Greek times. This sport also provides jobs for boxers, so you would be putting many out of work. If you do not approve of boxing, why ban it... Just avoid the sport yourself. Don't ruin what some people do for a living. It is like saying that because you personally despise running; and because it can cause injures, that you are going to ban it when lots of people actually ENJOY the sport. I respect everyone's different opinion but I have my own.
