I have volunteered with Toast Masters International

I have always been a “save the world” kind of person and over the course of my life I have volunteered for many different causes. In high school I worked with the mentally challenged and helped train children for the Special Olympics and just prior to my work with the monks I volunteered for eight years as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children. I feel if everyone donated some of their time to a cause that pulled at their heartstrings the whole world would transform!

While here at Wayne State I have volunteered to build homes for Habitat for Humanity, volunteered at health/blood pressure screenings throughout the city, and volunteered at Children's Hospital of Michigan and at the Wayne County Family Shelter. Volunteering is something that I have done since high school, and it would have been easy to push it aside when I started college. However, while in the Honors Program at Ferris I was reminded of how important it is to help others, especially those less fortunate. Honors gave me the nudge and helped me to refine my vision; volunteerism is a very important part of my life.

Can I Claim Benefits If I Have Volunteered for Redundancy?

I evolved from a confident child, through a self conscious teen, into a woman who possesses strong communication abilities. In my community I have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, God’s Love, National Honors Society, and teen council where I teach about positive relationships and health education. Through gay-straight alliance, envirothon, and speech and debate I have been a part of research, education, and communication to advance equal rights and tackle the effects of new policies on our community. I have spoken to congress officials in DC as a National Officer of Skills USA and attended board meetings for increased funding of education. I will continue to be involved no matter where I go. I believe in the value of education, diverse communities and societal enrichment. I am committed to continuing to evolve as a leader of the common good for the rest of my life by staying involved in the community and taking advantage of education. I have taken advantage of the education available to me by choosing AP and Honors courses, as well as many others to further develop my interests such as Drafting, Health Occupations, and Ceramics. I will be the first in my family to complete high school and pursue higher education. Though I come from a low income family, this is something that I’m proud of. It gives me strength, character, perseverance and determination and it is something that I’ve never let hold me back. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the knowledge that sometimes I have must push myself beyond my own limits. I am applying for this scholarship because I want to take advantage of every second of the day, college is my next step in this journey through life, and this scholarship can help me get there.

If I have concerns once I have volunteered, whom do I contact?

I have volunteered with ICAN for a few months now and I love working with them. Their supervisors are very friendly and if you have questions on anything they are sure to help and quick to respond. They are also sure to give you clear instructions on the projects they assign you as well. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to volunteer.

I have volunteered ever since, and also volunteered over the summer before senior year

I have volunteered with quite a few organizations in and around Atlanta and HERO for Children is by far the best. No other organization comes close!

I started volunteering here last summer for one of their large events which was a huge Field Day. There were just as many volunteers as children and EVERYONE was having a great time. I cannot imagine the amount of planning that went into having this event go off without a hitch.

Anyway, HERO for Children is an organization that seeks to improve the quality of life for children living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. They do this by teaching life skills development, providing emotional and mental support through mentoring relationships, and just making sure that the children have access to a wide range of life experiences.

It's great! I have been mentoring with them for less than a year but, I can already tell that this is going to be a long term commitment.

If you are looking for a way to get involved, I would highly recommend HERO for Children.

How to Know when Not to Volunteer: 12 Steps (with Pictures)

I have volunteered at several places throughout Atlanta and this has BY FAR been my favorite. It is so organized and efficient while still being loads of fun!

I was first connected with this place through Hands on Atlanta! (Another great organization to get you connected.) On my first experience I made a great friend and helped sort more than 400 pounds of food and household items.

This is a great place to volunteer individually or to take a large group. Plus, it's a good way to do something for someone else while having fun!
