And here is the rub. As the neuroscientists at Davos reminded us, we humans are evolutionarily exquisite at working with small groups of people who are very similar to us – and particularly so if they are related. In fact, as Dunbar has shown, anything above 150 people and natural groups break up. We are pre-disposed to like people who are like us, we imitate people we admire, and across our networks our behaviours and attitudes are contagious.

Careful thought will help us see that we actually admire the with which a person is doing what they are doing. OK…. What is a beautiful/handsome person doing? Well, we wouldn’t admire them if they did not do something to maintain or bring out that beauty. We certainly would not admire a sloppy person who is well endowded. A person who dresses well is being disciplined about dressing well – so we may admire that person for their discipline. In the examples given, the people we admire have all the freedom to do what they choose, but they are self-imposing restrictions on their own freedoms to achieve something. Both of these women have been dead for over 50 years, but that doesn’t mean you can’t admire them. People still admire Jesus."He stands for achieving peace by way of peace, and since Gandhi and Martin Luther King aren't around, he's a placeholder for that kind of position," he said. "He says he's a 'simple monk,' but that's wishful thinking. He's a monk that's been saddled with the responsibility of shouldering the hopes and dreams of millions of Tibetan people. ... I suspect there is also a difference between people who we admire and people we would like our children to emulate.

Let us look at some examples of people we admire. We may admire a beautiful/handsome person. We may admire a friend who dresses well. We may admire a teacher who has influenced us. We may admire a musician who touches our heart. We may admire a sportsman for his skills. We may admire a parent for putting in effort with their child. We may admire a doctor for the healing power. What is a commonality in all this?

This blog serves as a tribute to the people whom we greatly admire and revere.
